Yogyakarta
Welcome to Yogyakarta
The Special Territory of Yogyakarta is a province situated in South-central Java, an area ruled by consecutive powerful Buddhist and Hindu empires for over a thousand years. The countryside around Yogya is graced by the biggest Buddhist monument in the world, Borobudur, and the slightly smaller Hindu temple complex of Prambanan. Yogyakarta in more recent history was governed by a long line of sultans, known for their highly refined court systems and performing arts. During the 1945 struggle against the Dutch, the Yogyakarta sultanate aided and sheltered revolutionaries; to return the favor, it was awarded special status by Indonesia’s new government. For this reason, the Sultanate of Yogyakarta continues to functions today, and is in fact the only one in Indonesia still doing so. The current Sultan, Hamengku Buwono X resides in the Kraton. Perhaps as a remnant of centuries of kingdoms and sultanates the social cosmos in Yogyakarta is still regarded by most Javanese as being an embodiment of cultural refinement, piety and grace, as well as the center for classical Javanese arts and mysticism.
